In 2007 a brewery was founded in Scotland, which is not only CO2-neutral, but even CO2-negative. This means that more carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere than is emitted. In the case of the brewery, the value of CO2 removal is twice as high as its emissions.
To achieve this, the company has initiated various projects in recent years. Around €33 million has been invested in green change for their plans. All breweries and bars run by the company use only green energy. Residues from the brewing process are converted into green gas, which is used by the company’s own brewery, among others. The company also uses anaerobic digesters to convert waste water into clean water and thus produce food-grade CO2 to carbonate the beers.

The company has also invested in its fleet of vehicles to electrify them. To solve the problem of carbon dioxide emissions caused by long transport distances, local breweries have been established in the UK, Germany, the USA and Australia.
But that’s not all: the company has acquired an area of over 800 hectares in the Scottish Highlands, which is now to be reforested. Up to one million trees are to be planted there within the next four years. This will not only promote biodiversity, but will also help prevent flooding and boost the economic development of rural areas.

An exemplary way of working, we think. We hope that in the years to come many companies will follow this example and become more conscious of their commitment to the environment.
