The biggest enemies of artists, authors and producers are probably people who publish, distribute and transform their works illegally. Blockchain uses a decentralized, distributed model that creates a general ledger with immutable entries that are checked by consensus. There are obvious advantages for artists and creators, such as a time stamp in the general ledger (also for later revisions), as proof of ownership. This information is published immediately and would be effectively immune to manipulation. For example, if someone illegally tries to register a work that has already been performed, the Blockchain Copyright Service can identify these legal problems and notify the original owner. While Blockchain technology will not completely eliminate piracy, it could provide IP owners with tools to improve law enforcement and protect their rights.
