As a result of the strict lockdown in Italy, water quality is said to have improved by about 30 percent. Researchers assume that there could be other reasons for this, however. For this statement, the quality of seawater was investigated over several weeks and now the first – but preliminary – results are to be published. This improvement should be particularly noticeable in the area around Rome. Sergio Costa, Minister of the Environment in Italy, had commissioned this and calls the research project a “photography of the sea”. In future, this data will be used by the research departments to make statements about the health of the coast.
Authorities explained that the improvement was mainly due to the lack of tourism, but also to the changing sea currents in April and May. This is because changing sea currents are accompanied by changing wind conditions and thus lead to changes in precipitation rates. The agricultural fertilisers contained in it, which evaporate, therefore do not ripple down again. Even the inhabitants of Italy from the cities have travelled less frequently to their coastal homes.
All in all, the process has left behind a moral that in future it would be better to take care of the coastal environment.
