Blockchain – the term and the topic have been the cause of ideologically heated discussions in the IT scene for several years now. While blockchain technology now seems to be making practical inroads in some branches of industry, the public sector is only hesitantly approaching the topic. One of the driving forces is the cooperative govdigital, founded at the end of 2019, which has been operating a productive Blockchain since summer 2021 and offers Blockchain Infrastructure as a Service to the public sector. govdigital uses a so-called Public Permissioned Ethereum Hyperledger Besu Blockchain for this purpose, which runs across nine public data centers. These node operators from the govdigital membership include only renowned IT service providers spread across Germany. So unlike well-known systems like Bitcoin, the govdigital blockchain is run by absolutely trustworthy public actors: all the data centers “know” each other very well. All of them are certified at least by the international standard 27001.
