According to a recent report of the Central Bank of Russia dated October 13, the government continues to work on a digital ruble. Its goal is to complement other forms of money, namely cash and bank accounts. Unlike crypto currencies and stablecoins, the “viability” of the digital ruble is guaranteed by the government. The already existing digital payment infrastructure, which is used by payment terminals and ATMs, for example, could thus also be used as a payment channel for the digital ruble. Thus, the digital ruble will stimulate innovation and competition in the financial sector, precisely because it will make money transfers from one financial intermediary to another faster and easier, the report says. Interestingly, one of the uses of the digital ruble should also be to fight corruption. It is intended to ensure that funds for state-funded projects are not misappropriated.
