The natural force of the sea brings enormous amounts of energy, even when other producers are taking a break due to weather conditions. A Bavarian start-up company has shown how well this works. Since 2018, four wave power plant modules have been installed in the Greek port city of Heraklion. At the bottom, each module carries a float, a plate up to three metres in diameter, which rises and falls with the swell. A lifting rod carries the movement upwards, where it drives up to twelve generators and this movement is converted into electricity. At the peak, each module delivers 24 KW. Such a system could produce about 550,000 kWh per year. This would be enough to supply around 100 households with electricity. Research is also currently underway to find an efficient connection solution to simplify power transmission. The aim is to avoid conversion losses and manage the full potential of the generation. A combination of wave and wind power plants would also be possible.
